Click the partition on which your operating system is installed - in this case it's called Mac OS X - and, under the First Aid tab, click Repair Disk Permissions. Mac Disk Utility; Disk First Aid Mac; Disk Repair For Mac Osx; Disk Repair For Mac Os 10.13; macOS Recovery is part of the built-in recovery system of your Mac. Disk First Aid 8.6.1, despite having been originally released for Mac OS 9.0.4, can still run on Mac OS 8.1 on a 68040. It is the last version to run on a 68k Mac. Later versions of Disk First Aid that shipped with Mac OS 9.x were exclusive to PowerPC.

Disk Doctor

Well that was a bit worrying. I was curious about First Aid in Disk Utility and how it would work with the two volumes in one structure which has caused a bit of conversation on these forums so I decided to give it a try.
The resulting message is as you see below and it is the same no matter which volume you choose Macintosh HD or Macintosh HD - Data.

The first thing you notice other than the slightly worrying wording in the dialogue box, 'this may last several minutes or hours' is that the desktop goes black, or a very dark grey, you are immediately aware that this is different from First Aid in any other macOS I have used.
Fortunately the process completed successfully as hoped in a minute or thereabouts with no problems found.

Editor’s Note:Shortly after MacCentral posted this article, the file was apparently pulled from circulation on Apple’s download site. In the interim, readers have successfully downloaded and installed the new version of Disk First Aid by using the Software Update control panel.

Apple has posted its hard disk repair utility Disk First Aid 8.6.1 to its Download Web site. The new version is for Mac OS 9.0.4 and later.

Disk First Aid Mac Failed

Apple notes the following changes in Disk First Aid 8.6.1:

  • This version of Disk First Aid repairs certain types of master drectory block damage on Mac OS Extended format volumes. The previous version of Disk First Aid identifies the issue but doesn’t repair the damage.
  • Disk First Aid 8.6.1 also improves the compatibility of Mac OS Extended format hard disks with Mac OS X.

  • This version of Disk First Aid can repair more kinds of problems on a startup hard disk. However, Apple recommends that you start your computer from a different disk (such as a CD or floppy disk) before repairing the startup disk.

    Disk First Aid is distributed for free from Apple. The software is provided as part of Apple’s basic installation suite for Mac OS 9.1 and lower.
